NIGA Scholarships To Be Redirected To Tribal
Colleges
Apr 28, 2004
The National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA)
announced that it will redirect charitable
contributions recently received by the association
in anticipation of the establishment of The
Nighthorse Foundation to American Indian Tribal
colleges.
Earlier this month at its Annual Trade Show in
Albuquerque, N.M., NIGA honored U.S. Sen. Ben
Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), who will be leaving
the Senate in six months. The Senator announced
his plans to the establish The Nighthorse
Foundation, which will provide educational
scholarships to Native American youth.
Because NIGA was aware of Campbell’s intent to
help Indian students when he departs the Senate,
the Association independently encouraged its
member Tribes to contribute to the Nighthorse
Foundation. Campbell indicated that he will not
accept any donations until he leaves the Senate,
since the Foundation will not become active until
that time.
NIGA Chairman Ernest L. Stevens, Jr. said “we are
very pleased that the money collected will assist
Native Americans in their pursuit of higher
education.”
The National Indian Gaming Association is a
non-profit trade association comprised of 184
American Indian Nations and other non-voting
associate members. The common commitment and
purpose of NIGA is to advance the lives of Indian
people- economically, socially and politically.
NIGA operates as a clearinghouse and educational,
legislative and public policy resource for Tribes,
policymakers and the public on Indian gaming
issues and tribal community development. |
